Voyager (published 1993) is the third book in the Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon. Centered on time travelling 20th century doctor Claire Randall and her 18th century Scottish Highlander warrior husband Jamie Fraser, the books contain elements of historical fiction, romance, adventure and fantasy.[1]
The heroine of the bestselling Outlander (1991), Claire, returns in Voyager as a mother to Brianna Randall and living in Boston in the year 1968. The preceding novel, Dragonfly in Amber (1992), ended with Claire and Brianna coming to grips with the truth of the identity of Brianna’s real father, Jamie Fraser, and Claire’s travel through time. In Voyager, Claire and Brianna trace Jamie’s life since the battle of Culloden during the Jacobite rising of 1745. Voyager opens on the battlefield at Culloden, where Jamie Fraser finds himself gravely wounded and his rival Jack Randall dead. Jamie is carried to a nearby farmhouse where 18 Highland soldiers have sought refuge after the battle of Culloden. Harold Grey, Earl of Melton, arrives as representative of the Duke of Cumberland and announces the survivors will be shot. As each man is led outside to be executed, Melton takes his name for the records. At Jamie’s turn, Melton recognizes him as famed Jacobite “Red Jamie”, but is forbidden to execute him because Jamie spared his younger brother, Lord John Grey, at Preston, and he sends Jamie home to die of his wounds.
When the English scour the country for Jacobite rebels, Jamie hides in a cave near Lallybroch. He visits his sister, Jenny, and her family once a month to shave, wash, and hear news. By invoking a deed of sasine, Jamie signs Lallybroch over to Jenny’s eldest son, also called Jamie, to prevent the English from seizing their home as the property of a traitor. For a brown wool cap he wears to cover his distinctive red hair, Jamie becomes a Scottish legend, the “Dunbonnet”, and arranges to have himself be captured, whereby his tenants claim the reward and prevent famine among themselves. Dunsany has two daughters; the elder, Geneva, is infatuated with Jamie but is betrothed to Lord Ellesmere, an elderly man, and she blackmails Jamie into sexual relations with her. Geneva leaves Helwater and marries Lord Ellesmere. Nine months later, she gives birth to a boy and dies the next day. Ellesmere tells Lord Dunsany that the baby is not his, and threatens to kill him; but Jamie kills Ellesmere instead. The baby, called William, returns to Helwater with them. In reward for his actions, Lady Dunsany offers to ask Lord John to petition for a pardon so he can go home to Lallybroch. In the 20th century, Reverend Wakefield’s adopted son, Roger MacKenzie, offers to determine Jamie’s fate. When Roger, Claire, and Claire’s daughter Brianna find evidence of Jamie writing an article printed in 1765, Claire considers returning to him, and Brianna supports her. Claire finds Jamie in Edinburgh under the name of Alex Malcolm, smuggling liquor in the guise of a printers’ shop. His nephew, Young Ian, runs away from Lallybroch to “assist” his uncle in the business. Claire is reunited with her unofficial adopted son, Fergus, whom she knew as a 10-year-old French pickpocket, now in his 30s. To explain her absence, the family tells everyone that Claire was with relatives in France, believing that Jamie was killed at Culloden, and only just learned that he was alive.
After a failed smuggling run, Jamie takes Claire and Young Ian to Lallybroch, where Claire discovers that Jamie married again and has two stepdaughters, Marsali and Joan, and that Jamie’s wife is Laoghaire, who, 20 years earlier, had Claire arrested and nearly burned at the stake for witchcraft. Angry and betrayed, she leaves Lallybroch, but Young Ian brings her back, telling her that Laoghaire has shot Jamie. Upon return, Claire sees that the wound is infected and saves Jamie with antibiotics and syringes brought from the 20th century. Jamie negotiates a settlement with Laoghaire, to pay her 1,435 pounds in compensation, and to support her until she marries again. To get the money, he, Claire, and Young Ian return to the “seals’ treasure”: the Jacobite gold and jewels buried on an island not far from Ardsmuir. When they have the treasure, they plan to go to France and sell the jewels, but Young Ian is kidnapped by a strange ship. Jamie and Claire go to France, where Jamie’s cousin, Jared, helps them determine the ship’s identity and gives them a ship for the West Indies to rescue Ian. Laoghaire’s daughter Marsali goes with them in order to marry Fergus.
At sea, their ship is hailed by an English ship called the Porpoise, looking for a surgeon. While Claire is treating the sick, the Porpoise gets under way with Claire on board, and Claire learns that the customs agent searching for Jamie is aboard the Porpoise and plans to have Jamie arrested in Jamaica. Claire escapes to Hispaniola, where she is found by a naturalist studying the island’s flora, Dr. Stern, and a bizarre, drunken, defrocked priest. Jamie’s ship has run aground on Hispaniola following a storm, but Claire soon learns that Jamie had left them to rescue her. He is captured briefly but escapes and is reunited with Claire. A young woman is murdered at the ball and the guests are detained under suspicion. Claire also speaks to John and he tells her that he gave Jamie a portrait of his son, Willie, whom Jamie has yet to tell her about. Jamie and Claire search for Young Ian at a slave market and later at the plantation of a Mrs. Abernathy, whom they identify as the former Geillis Duncan. *April 6, 1929: Search for Planet X Begins
In 1902 astronomer Percival Lowell noted that the orbits of comets seemed to indicate that there was a planet beyond Neptune. Lowell had begun a search for the mysterious planet at his observatory in Arizona in 1905. He died in 1916 and willed most of his estate to the observatory. However, his wife, Constance, contested the will, and the search for “Planet X” was put on hold until 1927, when the litigation was resolved in Lowell Observatory’s favor. A new telescope was built especially for the search, which began with newly hired Lowell Observatory assistant Clyde Tombaugh exposing the first photographic plates of the newly revived search.
*February 18, 1930: Pluto Discovered
Tombaugh took many photographs of the region of the sky where Lowell had predicted Planet X would be. He compared photos taken days apart by using a blink comparator, which superimposed the images of the two plates and blinked rapidly between them. Stars would remain stationary, but a planet would move between the time the photos were taken, and the rapid blinking of the comparator would make it rapidly move back and forth. After less than a year of searching, Tombaugh found Pluto on two plates taken in January 1930.

The discovery of Pluto was announced on March 13, 1930. The news traveled all over the world. The next day Falconer Madan, who had been the head of the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, read the news at breakfast to his daughter, Ethel Burney, and her 11-year-old daughter, Venetia (later Venetia Phair). Venetia knew her mythology and suggested Pluto, the Roman god of the underworld. Madan loved the name and contacted his friend, astronomer Herbert Hall Turner, who contacted Lowell University. Many other names had been suggested, such as Minerva and Persephone, but Tombaugh and the other Lowell astronomers selected Pluto, which had Percival Lowell’s initials as its first two letters.
What Is a DMG File? A file with the DMG file extension is an Apple Disk Image file, or sometimes called a Mac OS X Disk Image file, which is basically a digital reconstruction of a physical disc. *June 22, 1978: Charon Discovered
Pluto had seemed to be alone at the edge of the solar system, but U.S. Naval Observatory astronomers James Christy and Robert Harrington noticed that images they had taken of Pluto had a bump. They looked at earlier images of Pluto and noticed that the bump moved around Pluto with a period of 6.4 days. Pluto had a moon! Charon, with a diameter of about 1,208 km (751 miles), is half as big as Pluto (2,370 km [1,470 miles]). The two are sometimes called a double planet.
*February 7, 1979: Pluto Crosses Neptune’s Orbit
Most planets have a roughly circular orbit, but Pluto’s is more stretched out like an ellipse. Pluto’s orbit has a higher eccentricity than the other planets’ orbits. A circle has an eccentricity of 0. Pluto, however, has an eccentricity of 0.251, which means that its orbit crosses that of Neptune, making that planet farther from the Sun from February 7, 1979, until February 11, 1999.
*May 15, 2005: Nix and Hydra Discovered
Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope discovered these two moons. Nix and Hydra are small and elongated; both are about 55 km (35 miles) long, and Hydra is the thicker of the two, 34 km (21 miles) across. These two moons wobble chaotically because they orbit in the constantly changing gravitational field of Pluto and Charon, which rotate around each other. The direction in which their rotational poles point changes drastically. Hubble was also used to find two other moons: Kerberos in 2011 and Styx in 2012.
*January 19, 2006: New Horizons Launched
To explore the Pluto-Charon system, NASA designed the small New Horizons probe and put it on one of the largest rockets, the Atlas V. When it left Earth, New Horizons was the fastest spacecraft ever, zooming to the end of the solar system at a speed of more than 58,000 km (36,000 miles) per hour. With the exploration of Pluto, NASA probes would have visited every planet, but before New Horizons even got past Jupiter…
*August 24, 2006: Pluto Demoted to Dwarf Planet
Pluto was always an oddity among the planets. It wasn’t small, rocky, and close to the Sun like the terrestrial planets. It wasn’t a large ball of gas like the gas giants. For decades it was unique, until, in the early 21st century, bodies the size of Pluto and Charon were discovered at the edge of the solar system in the Kuiper belt. One of them, Eris, was even larger than Pluto. Should the solar system have many more planets? What is a planet, anyway? Astronomers considered the question, and on this day the International Astronomical Union made the controversial decision that Pluto, Eris, and Ceres (the largest asteroid) would be the first three dwarf planets.
*July 14, 2015: New Horizons Flies by Pluto
After nine and a half years of travel, New Horizons finally reached its destination. As it got closer, it saw unusual features on Pluto, such as a dark region near the equator dubbed the “whale” and a lighter heart-shaped region. On this day New Horizons came within 12,500 km (7,750 miles) of Pluto and 28,800 km (17,900 miles) of Charon. New Horizons was expected to continue over the following months to send information from its encounter back to Earth and get ready for its next destination, one of three possible Kuiper belt objects that it will encounter in 2018 or 2019.
*March 23, 2178: One (Plutonian) Year Since Discovery
Pluto is so far from the Sun that it takes a little more than 248 Earth years to complete one orbit. Who knows—this date is so far in the future that maybe humans will be there to ring in the first Plutonian new year.

Many other names had been suggested, such as Minerva and Persephone, but Tombaugh and the other Lowell astronomers selected Pluto, which had Percival Lowell’s initials as its first two letters.
What Is a DMG File? A file with the DMG file extension is an Apple Disk Image file, or sometimes called a Mac OS X Disk Image file, which is basically a digital reconstruction of a physical disc. For this reason, a DMG is often the file format used to store compressed software installers instead of having to use a physical disc. What is a DMG file? A DMG file is a mountable disk image used to distribute software to the macOS operating system. The file is typically downloaded from the Internet by a Mac user, then double-clicked to install an application on the computer. Dmg file extension. DMG files include something called a checksum, which basically verifies that the file is 100% intact. This is what you see when the file is opening: This little window first goes through a phase of verifying the file, and then once it’s sure the file is good, moves on to decompressing it. DMG files are macOS disk image files. They are much like ISO files—their Windows-based counterpart. These disk images normally contain program installation files for macOS apps, but they can also be used to hold compressed files. If it’s an app written for macOS, you obviously won’t be able to install and run the app on Windows.
*June 22, 1978: Charon Discovered
Pluto had seemed to be alone at the edge of the solar system, but U.S. Naval Observatory astronomers James Christy and Robert Harrington noticed that images they had taken of Pluto had a bump. They looked at earlier images of Pluto and noticed that the bump moved around Pluto with a period of 6.4 days. Pluto had a moon! Charon, with a diameter of about 1,208 km (751 miles), is half as big as Pluto (2,370 km [1,470 miles]). The two are sometimes called a double planet.
*February 7, 1979: Pluto Crosses Neptune’s Orbit
Most planets have a roughly circular orbit, but Pluto’s is more stretched out like an ellipse. Pluto’s orbit has a higher eccentricity than the other planets’ orbits. A circle has an eccentricity of 0. Pluto, however, has an eccentricity of 0.251, which means that its orbit crosses that of Neptune, making that planet farther from the Sun from February 7, 1979, until February 11, 1999.
*May 15, 2005: Nix and Hydra Discovered
Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope discovered these two moons. Nix and Hydra are small and elongated; both are about 55 km (35 miles) long, and Hydra is the thicker of the two, 34 km (21 miles) across. These two moons wobble chaotically because they orbit in the constantly changing gravitational field of Pluto and Charon, which rotate around each other. The direction in which their rotational poles point changes drastically. Hubble was also used to find two other moons: Kerberos in 2011 and Styx in 2012.
*January 19, 2006: New Horizons Launched
To explore the Pluto-Charon system, NASA designed the small New Horizons probe and put it on one of the largest rockets, the Atlas V. When it left Earth, New Horizons was the fastest spacecraft ever, zooming to the end of the solar system at a speed of more than 58,000 km (36,000 miles) per hour. With the exploration of Pluto, NASA probes would have visited every planet, but before New Horizons even got past Jupiter…
*August 24, 2006: Pluto Demoted to Dwarf Planet
Pluto was always an oddity among the planets. It wasn’t small, rocky, and close to the Sun like the terrestrial planets. It wasn’t a large ball of gas like the gas giants. For decades it was unique, until, in the early 21st century, bodies the size of Pluto and Charon were discovered at the edge of the solar system in the Kuiper belt. One of them, Eris, was even larger than Pluto. Should the solar system have many more planets? What is a planet, anyway? Astronomers considered the question, and on this day the International Astronomical Union made the controversial decision that Pluto, Eris, and Ceres (the largest asteroid) would be the first three dwarf planets.
*July 14, 2015: New Horizons Flies by Pluto
After nine and a half years of travel, New Horizons finally reached its destination. As it got closer, it saw unusual features on Pluto, such as a dark region near the equator dubbed the “whale” and a lighter heart-shaped region. On this day New Horizons came within 12,500 km (7,750 miles) of Pluto and 28,800 km (17,900 miles) of Charon. New Horizons was expected to continue over the following months to send information from its encounter back to Earth and get ready for its next destination, one of three possible Kuiper belt objects that it will encounter in 2018 or 2019.
*March 23, 2178: One (Plutonian) Year Since Discovery
Pluto is so far from the Sun that it takes a little more than 248 Earth years to complete one orbit. Who knows—this date is so far in the future that maybe humans will be there to ring in the first Plutonian new year.
